In The Works...

Every time I glance down at the pretty violet colored ink stains on my hands this afternoon I can't help but smile with my whole heart; thinking of how this bright and colorful order of folded lace doily note cards will soon be dry and headed off across the country to serve as favor tags at a loving couple's wedding. It's just such a remarkable thing to be able to create something from nothing. Something that will carry a special role for a truly lovely occasion.

Yeah, I'd say the month of love is off to a great start ♥

What is it about women and our adoration for all things miniature? It seems as if any ordinary object can be made absolutely adorable by shrinking it in size. Ever notice when you're in line at the checkout that all those little doo-dads by the register are tiny? Tiny containers of breath mints, tiny notebooks for your key chain, mini erasers shaped like a house. If they were normal size half of us wouldn't even look, but somehow tiny almost always equals cute.

Maybe its a maternal thing. Babies, kids, puppies, kittens - all tiny. All cute. But whatever the reason I honestly don't mind because I'm too busy being smitten with those tiny cute things.

With Gratitude

I'm feeling the Etsy love right about now. Especially since my Woodland Gift Tag Set was featured in yesterday's Etsy Finds email geared towards a DIY Holiday wrapping experience. Which, you all know I love.

Crazily enough though, I almost missed the inclusion all together. I spent the night at my sister's house, which I looove doing. I'm sure for her it gets tiring, but for me I just love waking up to her busy house with kids running about, eating breakfast, and getting ready for school. But, with all that activity I chose to rather quickly scan my morning emails and I almost missed that one of my handmade goodies was featured in the Etsy Finds email. Needless to say its been a very happy day with much to be grateful for. And with tomorrow being our American Thanksgiving gratitude sounds just about right.

Wishing you all a very happy and healthy Thanksgiving surrounded by those you love most.

Bad Days Don't Last Forever

Yesterday was a no good lousy terrible horrible rotten bad day. I woke up tired and stayed that way all day. So, when I pulled my car into the driveway in the evening and backed into the garage frame smashing up a section of my little car I shouldn't have been too surprised, but I was. I even had a good feel-sorry-for-myself cry while I took off my coat and boots in the back hall.

But, the nice thing about bad days is that they don't last forever - just 24 hours to be exact. And they are often cured by a late night cup of hot cocoa and an extra two hours of sleep the next day. These two things will prove to be a sad girl's life saver. Well, that and extra marshmallows.

Brown Paper Packages

It snowed here the other day. It melted when it hit the ground, but still...it snowed. I love the snow. I can't imagine having winter without it; the two are synonymous. For me they have to be, because if winter's not cold then what would happen to all those cozy indoor holiday traditions? Would they loose their magic? Because they do have have it. There is a tiny bit of magic woven into the fabric of our holiday traditions.Holidays can bring about a lot of pressure. Scheduling in your family time with your spouse's family time, digging out all the decorations that don't seem to be in the same spot you put them last year, frantically trying to finish up all those handknit scarves you're giving to all the women in your family, mall parking - 'nuff said. But the thing about all of those stressors is that, when you live in the moment, you'll find they're really part of the joy of the season. We can't manufacture time, but we can make something out of it.One of my favorite things to do is to weave some of that magic into each and every gift I give. I may not make all of my gifts by hand, but it doesn't mean I won't spend hours dressing them up and grooming them just so. Most people see gift wrapping as a tedious chore that's rushed through the night before, but not me. I cherish that time spent wrapping. I see it as a luxury; a chance to sit and immerse myself in the moment. I get to re-look at my purchases and envision how their intended recipient will use it, wear it, love it. I get to surround myself with my favorite things - scissors, paper, glue - and turn a white shirt box into a masterpiece. And that smile that lights up someone's face before they've even unwrapped their package - well, that's just plain old magical.

Pink Confetti and Elephant Dreams

Things are busy busy here in my workshop. I've been filling one custom order after the next and, seeing how winter wedding season is almost upon us, many have been of the snowflake variety.

Last night I worked in to the wee hours of the night getting this fun confetti order ready to ship out in the post today. Don't you just love those sweet colors?! And, so focused on my snowflake crafting task was I, that when I finally drifted off to sleep I dreamed of cutting happy little pink snowflakes to throw up in the air at an elephant parade. Sort of like this one, and this one, oh and this one too only brighter and in the daytime ♥

Alone Doesn't Mean Lonely

I love this video. Actually, I adore it. Her words rang so true to me. The whole time I was watching this I felt my chest grow warmer and larger. My love for humanity just filled it up.

It is a precious and beautiful thing to be a part of this world - and there truly are so many different ways to be a part of it. Thank you to my sister for showing me this little gem ♥

DIY, Your Own Way

Why should you buy everything already made in someone else's vision? Why not have a little fun and make it yourself? As a paper crafter and artist I sometimes take for granted that not everyone has the means - or quite frankly, the time - to make their mailing tags by hand, but that doesn't mean that they don't want to embellish and decorate a set of those tags 'til their hearts content.

So, with that thought in mind I lovingly handcrafted and pieced together some basic kits for the shop. I like to think of them as a do-it-yourself for paper enthusiasts. Use each kit to decorate gifts and enclosure cards oh so stylishly, write fun little lunchbox notes, make quirky to-do-lists, embellish journals and scrapbooks...whatever you create just be sure to have fun with it and, most importantly, let your creativity guide you.

Careful It's Hot

This year my long summer days were happily full of personalized requests and custom invitations. Last week I finished up the season's final order and immediately found myself immersed in a slew of handcrafted requests for Autumn and Winter weddings. Truly, I feel like I've somehow jumped from cool pink lemonade to hot apple cider in the blink of an eye - and I think I burned my tongue!

So, with the end of summer having somehow rushed by unbeknownst to me, I thought it necessary to slow down and reflect on some of my favorite summer projects for Birdcage Cards. 'Cause ya know, sometimes a girl just needs time to adjust and reflect. Here's a tiny sampling of what's been keeping my workspace aflutter...

I hope all you moms out there are busy being pampered and loved today - well, realistically at least the latter. It's a tough job being a mom and holidays tend to create more work for you, even if it's a holiday in honor of you - go figure. So, here's wishing all you dedicated hard working mothers a lovely day filled to the brim with with all the love and patience that you've dolled out to your family over the years.

Image above: the two variations of Mother's Day cards I made for my own mom, grandma, and sister this year! And, since the women in my family are such avid readers I made sure that each card came with a matching laminated bookmark. After the card has been long gone and recycled they will still have that little reminder of my gratitude for them floating through the pages of all the lovely books they read. Now, isn't that sweet?

Today is all about multi-tasking. Although, really, what day isn't? I just got back from an extra long weekend at my sister's in Canada and now I'm jumping back into work.

Today is Etsy's Success Symposium and I'm hoping to pick up a heavy handful of handmade business tips throughout the day. So, I've been tuning into the livestream videos from the comfort of my beloved antique spindle legged desk in my sun-porch studio while putting together a kit of D.I.Y. Valentine's for my sister to easily assemble with my 5 year-old niece. Don't you just love a mom who takes the time to teach her children the value of crafting things by hand?!

Gettin' into the Swing of Things...

For those of you who may have missed my twitter and facebook ramblings it's been a bit chaotic on my side of the world lately. My father underwent surgery right before Thanksgiving and is still recovering from the physical tolls of it. I had a blast participating in the LabRats' trunk show in Etsy's virtual labs, but I spent a lot of time editing pics and getting my shop ready for it. I've been sending out paper goodies in the post left and right and running myself haggard shopping for excellent presents.

And now, with December 25th right around the corner I must admit to finding myself blindly running through the motions of Christmas rather than truly getting in to the spirit of things. That is, until this past weekend when I decorated the tree, strung up my favorite white lights, watched 3 silly holiday movies via the Hallmark channel and Lifetime, and baked sugar cookies from scratch with my mom, sister, and niece - and of course, ate said cookies

It seems that a lot of sparkle and a little sugar was just what was needed to make a cold season feel all warm and cozy again.

How To: Hidden Staple Matchbook Notepad

With the holidays fast approaching if you're anything like me you're always on the look out for inexpensive and easy to make stocking stuffer ideas. Well here is a great little D.I.Y. that takes next to no time to whip up, is super easy to personalize (say with an initial stamp), and costs literally pennies per item to make. Ready for it? That's right - matchbook notepads, but this version is large enough to actually be useful and jot down lists and ideas in. Plus, it's complete with hidden staples which makes it both kid friendly and purse friendly - no pesky exposed staples snagging on fingers or fabric.

All right, let's get down to it. Here's what you'll need:
1. a strip of card stock which will serve as the notepad's cover measuring 2 3/4" x 11"
2. two sheets of basic copy paper for the inserts
3. a paper cutter for cutting your paper and to serve as your ruler
4. a heavy duty craft glue {Crafter's Pick works great and can be found at your local Michael's craft store.}
5. a stapler with at least 2 staples
6. two paperclips (optional)
7. a small perforated rotary cutter {You can also pick up a small handheld one at your local Michael's for $1.99 or just use your sewing machine minus the thread}
8. a bone folder to help make neat folds and crease lines (optional)

How To:
1. Cut your copy paper into strips measuring 2 1/5" wide by 11" long. You will get 3 strips per sheet.
2. Now take those strips and cut them down to 2 1/5" x 3 1/2" pieces. You will get 3 per strip. Count out 12 sheets of paper to go inside your notepad and put the rest aside for any other notepads you may want to make later.
3. Use your perforated rotary blade or an unthreaded sewing machine and perforate the copy paper 1/2" from the bottom and set aside.
4. Grab your strip of card stock and lay it face up. Fold inward a 1" flap at one end.
5. Flip your card stock over, face down, and fold a 1" flap after the first fold.
6. Keeping your card stock face down make a third 1" fold after the first two.
7. Keep all the folds sandwiched down together and measure 4" from the top of the folds towards the center of your card stock. Make a crease to be folded down as the cover later.
8. Now that your card stock is all folded take your sheets of copy paper and insert the perforated ends into the pocket created by first fold. Center the paper from the sides of the card stock getting ready to staple at each end. You can use your paperclips to help keep the sheets of paper together and to keep them in the right spot...
9. ...because you will need to turn your card stock over to staple it. Make sure you place those staples below the perforated lines. This way the paper can be easily ton out of the notepad.
10. Get out your craft glue and add some paste between the second and third folds and smoosh the two together.
11. With those pieces glued together now apply some glue to the other side, being mindful not to get any on the copy paper, and fold inward making a sandwich.
12. Now fold the 4" crease down over the copy paper making a cover. Trim any excess card stock off so that the cover will tuck comfortably into the bottom lip like a standard matchbook.
Now that your notepad is complete grab those stamps, linocuts, paper punches and have fun decorating! Don't be afraid to put some personality into those stocking stuffers.

The Many Faces of Eve

It's getting to be that time. That time of year when you curl up on the sofa, pull out your paper and pen, and start jotting down your holiday gift ideas. I love this time of year because shopping for other people is one of my favorite things to do. I'm so hesitate to spend money on myself that it's such an indulgent thing for me to buy something 100% guilt free. Plus, I can honestly say that I'm an excellent gift giver. I have a knack for reading people - well except where guys are concerned. Just ask my dad or my brother-in-law. For three years running now they each tend to get the same thing: "something" and socks for my dad and "something" and a Tim Horton's gift certificate for my brother-in-law. Yippee. But, in my defense it's not entirely my fault. Women are just easier to shop for. We like pretty things. Be it clothes, jewelry, a bauble - if it suits us, rarely will we ever say "ehhh, I don't need it."

Still, there are some women that can be tricky to shop for. So in my down time I did some virtual shopping and put together a gift guide for that clever, quirky, hipster, laid back, sophisticated, slightly over-the-top friend. Because, we all have someone who defies description.

You Say Goodbye, I Say Hello

I've been putting off a "I'm home" post for 4 days now because it'll mean that...well, I'm home and vacation is over. But, since I've already been back to Birdcage Cards's business, house cleaning, dog walking, and babysitting I think its proof positive that it's life as normal once again - though not that that's a bad thing. After taking 2 days to travel home and getting locked out of the Newark airport I'm quite glad to be in the comfort of home.I brought home a slew of magical memories, a few of which are among the most meaningful of my life, tons of fun travel pics, and a heavy handful of super cool souvenirs and trinkets.

By far my favorite souvenir was, you guessed it, a bag. However, in my defense, this isn't just any bag. It's a super special, handmade in Guatemala, leather and Mayan brocade weekender by John Heaton. The quality is superb and yay for me the price tag was not nearly as steep as the one listed on the shop's website! Props to my dad for raising me in a flea market where everything is negotiable.

Unfortunately, I was in a bit of a frenzy before I found said weekender. You see, low maintenance me was convinced that I could pack for two weeks (including two formal gowns) in a simple carry-on suitcase. Well, once there I realized that not only had I under-packed, but I packed the wrong things. So, needless to say purchases had to be made and before I knew it my (or should I say my sister's) little red carry-on could fit no more. The day before I left I added shopping for luggage to my to-do list and while I ended up missing out on seeing one particular convent I did come home with this lovely lady... ...nice right?! And don't worry I haven't forgotten to share some of my gorgeous pictures of the rehearsal dinner, wedding, and city of Antigua. It's just that I took so many I hardly know where to begin! I guess I'll have a lot of sorting through to do tonight.

Adventures in Antigua

I'm writing this post from a very swanky suite in a very cool city and I have to say that I have officially been bitten by the travel bug. The city of Antigua, Guatemala is quite literally amazing and it would be impossible not to fall head over heels in love with it. The sheer volume of historic sights is overwhelming. I mean I spent hours exploring the ruins of just one cathedral the other day. At that rate, I'm hopeful that I'll get all my handwritten asteriks on my little map checked off before its time to return home!

But, until I do you can bet that I'll be taking nothing for granted and creating some life-lasting memories.

Hello lovelies! I'm thrilled to write this quick post this morning because it finally means that today is the day. I'm off to Guatemala to participate in my dear friend's wedding. I'll be enjoying the beautiful city of Antigua and refreshing my college Spanish - yikes!

I promise to take a ton of pretty pictures and share them when I return. I'll even try to get in a post or two while I'm away. Otherwise, I'll see ya'll at the end of the month. I'll be back just in time to catch my niece and nephew in their Halloween costumes - ahhhhh, how I LOVE Halloween.

Monday Morning Movie: Blue Valentine

I'm a big fan of both Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling. So, the pairing of the two in Blue Valentine holds great appeal to me. I've been hearing such good things about this movie, but am wondering when the heck is it gonna come out?! And now with an NC-17 rating it seems it may be tricky finding a theatre to show it. Unlike many of my dear friends I am not a relationship optimist. Like one of my favorite books titles I sort of feel that all things fall apart - at least they do eventually. Still, I'm a firm believer in humanity's beautiful capacity to re-build.

It'll be interesting to see how the story develops as it tracks a young married couple's relationship from the beginning to its demise. I'm already wondering if the couple will work to re-build what they started with or go their separate ways. Either way, it looks to be a good flick.

Time to Gush

It's cold and rainy here in Buffalo today - shocker I know - but the smile on my face is plastered on so wide that I'm feeling all sunny and warm. I'm super excited to share my news. Some of you who get Etsy's emails may already know what I'm going to say, but for the rest of you - I'm just dying to gush! My Autumn Harvest Confetti was featured in Etsy's Fall Entertaining Guide yesterday. I'm feeling a bit stunned to be included and am pleasantly swamped with orders - woo hooo!

I'm getting a ton of traffic to my shop and a bunch of new hearts (hearts are Etsy's way to bookmark a favorite shop or item). For a handmade artist literally every bit of word of mouth is a treasured thing, but to reach an audience this wide at the recommendation of one of Etsy's shopping guides is huge and I'm truly grateful.

What Time Is It Mr. Fox?

Fall is for foxes! So let's pay a little homage to our furry forest friend Mr. Fox today with some foxy Etsy finds. Clockwise from top left: absolutely gorgeous desperately calling out my name Rose print, delicate fox necklace in 14k gold; perfect for that quirky subtle statement piece, to be the coolest trick-or-treater in town slap on this hand carved leather red fox mask, a bit of fun on your hand to make you smile, while typing perhaps, white fox fixed finger ring, is it possible to not be obsessed with this illustration - my cup of tea print, love the idea of dressing up your entryway with this groovy fox on a bike door mat, I'm sure many of us are familiar with the adorable plushes from Sleepy King, but I can't help raving about them some more. This sleepy forest fox is my favorite handmade plush in town, A fox in a tie with a pipe blowing geometric triangle shapes in assorted colors? Come on what's not to like about The Duke of NY print?

It's been a crazy week for me. Filled with a plethora of family and friend outings and get-togethers. So it felt great to spend the day today locked up in my sunporch workshop diving in to some Fall projects. Today I handcut over 1000 of these cute Autumn Harvest Confetti pieces. I even got to play with table settings for some fun product pictures. And while I'm especially loving this Autumn Harvest Confetti for Fall weddings, I gotta say these are definitely going on my Thanksgiving tabletop this year!

Tomorrow morning I'll be adding these to my shop with all the other new items that have been trickling in, but for now its off to bed. I'm aching for some sweet dreams.

Methods of Printmaking

Lately I've been asked just what does "hand printed" mean? So I thought I'd take a second today and try to share a basic understanding of a few popular types of printmaking. There are 4 types of printing, stencil, relief, intaglio, and planographic. Each of these categories has a plethora of different techniques, a few of which I'll delve into below.

1.Screen Printing: From the Stencil category of printmaking. Also know as silk-screening this type of printing is praised for its relative ease of production with very high quality results. The basic process involves stretching mesh across a rectangular frame and using a light sensitive photo emulsion to create a “stencil”. The ink is then pushed through the unblocked areas of mesh to create an image.

2.Block Printing: This form of relief printing dates back to 5th century China in the form of hand carved wooden blocks which were used to print text and images on to paper and fabric. Today many block prints are the result of hand carved linoleum commonly referred to an linocuts. The image is transferred on to paper by rolling an inked brayer over the raised areas of the carving and then applying some pressure and elbow grease through the use of a press, a baren, or a spoon.

3.Engraving: From the intaglio family of printmaking. Metal plates are carved using a steel burin. Ink is then applied to the entire metal plate only to be wiped off, leaving only the grooves or carved areas full of ink. Once put in a press the paper picks up the ink from the carved lines making a print. The earliest engravings date back the the 15th century and, today, our paper money is printed from metal engraving plates.

4.Lithography:From the planographic family. An image is drawn on to stone (typically limestone) with a greasy crayon. Acid is used to burn the image into the surface. Ink is then applied to the whole surface, but sticks only to the greasy marks of the drawing. A sheet of paper is placed on top of the stone and the image is transferred on to the paper through the use of a printing press. This is truly an exceptional method of printmaking that, though rarely used today, was extremely popular during the late 1800's until the 1920's. All those bright and colorful circus posters, WWI propaganda posters, and product advertisements were lithographs.
5.Digital Printing: Images are printed using a digital printer rather than a traditional press or by hand. It has a near immediate turn-around as the creation of printing plates is not needed. The tricky thing about digital printing is getting an accurate color reproduction. The difference between high quality prints and low quality prints is in the type of ink used. Today's Giclée prints are basically fine art prints produced on an ink-jet printer.

These techniques represent just a fraction of the many different types of printmaking. While the chemicals and inks available to print makers today vary greatly from centuries, and even decades, ago you will often find that the basic methods of printing remain carefully preserved by today's printers. After all, printmaking is an important part of our cultural history. While perusing through my October issue of House Beautiful my eyes stumbled upon this delicious Hans Wegner swivel chair and I had to make my new found obsession known. I love the mix of leather, wood, and chrome. There is so much going on with this chair, but it comes off so simplistic and chic. And while yes, I am in the market for a new desk chair, sadly this $10,000+ is a tad out of reach. But hey, what's a girl without a dream?

Hi all! Things have been busy busy for me lately: burning new screens, carving new linocuts, cutting new tags, printing new seals. No time for end-of-summer slacking. I've got a lot of new items to be added to the shop for the up-coming season, including a line of hand-cut and printed packaging materials. In the next few days I'll be finishing up a basket that I'm donating to a lovely fundraiser (more on that later) and then it's all product photos. Finger's crossed that this wave of bright sunshine lasts through the week!

If you've been hiding under a rock like me you may have missed August 10th's release of Target's collaboration with design studio Poketo. Target has been luring big name designers as well as quirky lesser known artists into producing budget friendly wares for quite some time now and, I gotta say, few have had me as excited as their most recent hook-up with Poketo.

L.A. based Poketo was founded in 2003 with the goal to produce art for the everyday. Working together with a slew of ever-charging artists Poketo takes otherwise expensive gallery art and showcases it on wallets, tote bags, key chains, plates and more. Their back-to-school Fall line for Target does not disappoint; full of 52 quirky print accessories ranging from wallets (that helped make Poketo famous) to water bottles.
I urge you to head on over to your local Target today and snag a few pieces of your own before they're gone. I was in there yesterday and when I saw that Poketo sign I made a b-line through the accessories department and immediately started filling up my basket. I came home with some super fun 3-in-1 pouches and a new camera bag. It hurt me not to buy it all. Sadly, I had to walk away from this wallet and luggage tag. But, not to worry, I'm sure they will find a nice home soon.

It's cool and rainy here this morning. So much so that I actually dressed in jeans! So sad, but one positive thing about summer coming to an end is that a new Fall line is soon to be released by, one of my favorite designers, Built by Wendy. And even better than that is the fact that their last collection is now on sale through August 28th.

It's a great time to shop for those pieces that, with the addition of some thick tights, a textured cardi, and some leather booties, will transition smoothly into Fall and Winter. Here's a few of my favorite multi-seasonal pieces...

A Sun-Charged Day

It has been such a great day today! I've been working on some lovely 5"x7" Swallowtail Invites in my bright and sunny workshop. My space has just been flooded with light all day, but there's not even a trace of that yucky humidity that's been hanging 'round Buffalo all weekend. So now I'm taking an early dinner/late lunch break from a productive day in my workshop and I thought it'd be the perfect time to share a tiny taste of a few projects I've recently worked on.
The only problem is I keep forgetting to photograph my local orders. I worked on a handful of them in the past few months, but because each was hand delivered it never occurred to me to take some product shots like I do for my online orders. And its driving me nuts since they were all lovely custom invitation orders and I could have used some shots for my portfolio! Ugghhh, I guess I'll have to chalk it up to part of the learning process and know that next time it will be on my mind. Well, at least I hope it will, eek!

Virtual Vaca

Ohhh, my sweet little blog. I remember you when. When, you were well tended and cared for not recklessly abandoned for months at a time. I'm so very sorry for my absence all. It's not that I lost the blog love. It's just that I had an entire virtual overload. From blogging to tweeting and facebook, as well as all sorts of other online networking I just sort-of had a digital meltdown and needed a break. The weather got warmer and I needed to create some free time to breathe; to photosynthesis and re-charge.

But I've been missing my outlet and my online friends so ya'll can consider me back! I'll return to posting my fun finds and themed tributes several times a week and hope to "see" all my online friends again real soon. So, I wish you a very happy weekend and I'll see you Monday!

So Long Blues...

Well I don't know when it happened, but it did. April is nearly over and we're one month closer to the summer - woo hoo!!! And while I know that rainy days are sure to be scattered through our summer months I like to think that the gloom and doom of concentrated rainfall is over for us...well until the Fall that is.

Just a Spoon Full of Sugar...

I'm not much of a cook. I've got a handful of recipes down that I know by heart and a bunch more that, it's safe to say, I could improvise decently if I had to. But, let's be honest, I avoid cooking (and I do not consider eggs, omelets, grilled cheese, or heating up canned soups on the stove cooking) like the black plague. It's such a chore to me. I'd rather wash the woodwork in my entire house with a toothbrush before I'd take on the task of cleaning a chicken.

Now, baking on the other hand - well let's just say if it involves chocolate chips I'm all for it. But it still doesn't mean that I'd jump at the chance to whip up a batch of cookies either. No, I am not my mother's daughter. I am not a cook, a baker...or a candlestick maker (sorry couldn't help it). I do not seek out happiness from whipping up ingredients in a large bowl mostly because I cannot live in that moment. When I cook I am all too aware of the amount of cleaning that is to come soon after. And where's the fun in that?

Still, there is something beautiful and awe-inspiring about crafting an apple pie, crust and all, from scratch. My grandmother is quite skilled in the pie making department and for years I've been meaning to sit in on one of her crust making afternoons. Learning the recipe by watching her busy hands rather than it reading some old dusty cook book. Besides, part of the charm of cooking or baking is in carrying out the tradition; doing something the way your elders did before you. Isn't it? So, for today, for this Wednesday, I want to learn that tradition and carry it on...with an industrial strength dishwasher at an arm's length that is.

I've been spotting a lot of little critters lately - on my front stoop, in my niece's drawings, in the silly costumes for the facebook games I play, and now on Etsy in the form of these oh so fabulous and clever handbags and wallets from the Tsuru Bride. Every now and then you stumble across that rare find on Etsy that reminds you of the cool indie flick you just saw or that strange lanky grungy boy that you secretly crush on for God knows why. There are just some things that you find and their very coolness shows just how un-cool you are without them. And, well, these clutches are the bees' effing knees.

Now, aesthetically its not exactly to my likely though its decidedly mid-century modern flair, I have a feeling, will suit many of you. And I know he's not the first to come up with the idea, but come on whether its to your taste or not you have to admit his execution is beautiful. And actually, the more I look at that stunning white modular seat with the red cushion the more I think I have to have it!

Here it is the first week of February; the start of the "love" month, but honestly this winter weather is giving me no love. Its so bloody cold here in Buffalo! I can't stomach it anymore. So much so that my poor dog has been deprived of his daily walks for the past 3 days! Okay, 4 days. I know I know its neglectful, but again its just so darn cold you could really rationalize that I'm actually doing him a favor; protecting him from the viciousness that is winter. See, the thing with winter is is that its really one of the most dangerous predators in nature. It lures you in with its beauty and alluring stillness while prolonged exposure to its elements can and will kill you.

I know it sounds dramatic, but A.) its true and B.) I've got pent up fever. I could use a little drama! What?! Okay, okay I'll go put on 25 layers and walk the dog, but I won't be happy about it...

So, while working on writing some new listings, today's post, playing a computer game, cleaning the house, and checking my email I discovered this gorgeous and quirky Heart Beat Brooch that makes my own heart go pitter patter. I'm on a bit of a shopping moratorium as I'm saving for a very special event in Guatemala (psst, love you Vicky!). So, even though I do want this bad boy I will restrain myself from snagging it, but for those of you who aren't saving for a holiday hurry up and buy this piece. I have a feeling that it will sell fast. It's definitely wearable art. Plus, it reminds me of my new motto - to live life with more love; to greedily soak it all up and give it out freely.

Under Pressure

I tend to keep this blog all happy and light; fun girly stuff. So, you'll have to excuse my return to real life for a moment with today's post, but I'm finding that my stress level about the state of our planet has been growing exponentially lately. Environmentally our planet is stressed. Species become extinct, fresh drinkable water gets depleted, polluted, green space is running out. Our society is breaking down all around us. Our country's infrastructure is falling apart and for a developed nation we have one of the highest rates of child poverty in the world. And, I'm kind of feeling very heavy with the world's problems this morning and just as I was about to shake that yucky feeling and distract myself with something light and girly it dawned on me that I'm nearing 30. I'm an adult now and the time for distractions is just not an option anymore.

I am not one for New Year's resolutions, but I am one for making committed changes. So, from this day on I will be taking my mother's advice (shhhh, don't tell her!) and I will become a proactive citizen of my country, my planet, and my species. Every day I start will start with this one thing in mind...

What will you do today? Small changes around your own house? Volunteer work in your community? Let each day be new, be fresh. Surprise yourself and love more - you, your planet, and your fellow mankind. I know I will and just that thought...makes me feel a whole lot lighter already.

This is what my desk looks like right about now. Every year I make handcrafted valentines to send out to my loved ones and this year - well this year I have an Etsy shop. So, I've been making twice as many. I've always felt that the best valentines I've ever gotten were the ones made by little fingers with crayon smudgings and dried glue everywhere. Now mine may not be so messy, but they are made with just as much heart because, I think, nothing says I love you better than a homemade valentine. Well, that's my two cents anyway.

I'm surrounded by freshly fallen white fluffy snow and mid-way into winter, you know what? I still love it! So, today in honor of my lovely and cold (brrr!) world outside I thought I'd pay a little homage to white - Etsy style. Enjoy...

While I openly admit to being more than a little obsessed with each item I've picked for this collage, it is this knit hat that really makes my heart go pitter patter. I mean did you see that crocheted flower?! Calling all secret admirers - pssst, I love it! Okay, next up what girl doesn't love a little hair adornment? And this sparrow bobby pin is just the thing for bangs too stubborn to grow out. Attention, attention: please excuse the minor bird theme. It was not intended...scouts honor! I mean, hey, we can't help what we're drawn to and really can you blame me for being drawn to this gorgeous ceramic owl cup and fun necklace made of white lace and old copper chains?! I didn't think so.

So, I think we'd all agree that there is just something sexy about chillin' in your man's button down and this sheer boyfriend button up will leave you happy and your man clothed. Oh, wait would that make you unhappy? hehe! And I had to share this oh so enticing handmade soap - ahhh, the fresh scent of baby powder. Plus, isn't that such a lovely product photo?! I mean, really, I wanna buy it. Now, you can't have a snow theme without a little snowflake inspiration and these winter doily earrings do just the trick. And last but not least, I was so happy to stumble upon these lovely life mantra lavender sachets. What a great idea to have a little inspiration jump out at you as you riffle through your sweater drawer.

I should probably start the year off right. Get organized, get in shape, be a better human being, yadda yadda. But all I can think about when I look at these oh so colorful moleskine notebooks is the amount of waste involved. And then I'm surprised to find myself thinking "yeah, but aren't they pretty" and "maybe it would be helpful to have a separate notebook for each month". Come on Kate! How does getting organized involve keeping track of 12 different notebooks?!

Ahhh, but my love of paper products is winning out and I think I could probably rationalize a use for them. How 'bout you?

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday filled with loved family members and treasured old friends, hot chocolate and homemade marshmallows, overflowing stockings and way too many orderves, snow days and functioning heaters, and new gloves and cashmere socks...or at least a few of the above. I for one had no homemade marshmallows or cashmere socks to speak of, but hey, a girl can dream can't she?

Anyhow, I just wanted to share a little hello and this adorable picture I found mingled in on facebook somewhere. I know my December blogging was a bit of a crap shoot on here. And when I stumbled across A Fine Frenzy I knew I had found myself a new musician to love. So, today I've grabbed two little movies for you. Granted, the first up isn't much of a movie; more like a song with a backdrop, but hey, it's a lovely song and if this is considered Christmas music then you can sign me up. Here's hoping you enjoy them both as much as I have this morning...

Wrap It Up...

It's been all snowy and blistery this week making it hard to get out and pick up the rest of my Christmas necessities. So, I've been focusing on all the little things I can do to be prepared for the big week while snugly tucked away inside: like making chocolate covered pretzels to go in those cute holiday gift tins - that is they will go in the gift tins when I get a chance to pick some up; pulling out all the decorations and twinkling lights that I could find to make my house bright enough to direct airline traffic; re-assembling the wreath I made last year after I found it smashed and crammed and all out of shape stuffed into a dark corner in the back of my attic - I swear I put it away last year with lots of love and care...really I swear! And, hands down, my favorite part of buying holiday gifts - wrapping them. I know a lot of people look to gift wrapping as a dreaded chore, but not me. Afterall, I do love a pretty bow.

So, today I've gathered a few of my favorite wrapping techniques to share with you. Hopefully, it will help generate some ideas of your own. Because, afterall, wrapping a gift in a proper box with holiday paper and a bow shows you spent time on it, put care into it, and the person lucky enough to open either that small secret Santa gift or a luxurious cashmere cardigan will feel quite loved and special...and isn't that what it's all about?

1. If you're getting a gift from me this year (or any year for that) chances are it's going to look like this. There is just something warm and familiar to me about gifts wrapped in kraft paper, topped with organic decorations like pine cones and branches and a little woodland inspired gift tag.

2. peony bow: A bow shaped like my favorite flower?! Seriously, do I even need to share anymore? And if the bow proves way too tricky for your little fingers then use some double sided tape and a real flower like shown here.

3. I've been dying to take a go at these fabric envelopes, but my sewing machine is on the fritz and really who has the time to hand stitch anything these days?

4. Love love this idea from Real Simple! Use your printer to decorate your own gift wrap with a special holiday message. Just be sure to wrap the paper on a bias to give it that fun look. Or try this adorable calendar wrap idea, shown above, that's along the same line.

5. Not good at tying bows? Grab some fat ribbon and knot it. It will look just as pretty and no one will be the wiser.

6. bowtie pasta bow: Wrapping a gift for the cook in the family? Add a little whimsy and grab some bowtie pasta and plain string from the kitchen cabinets and decorate away.

7. shopping bags re-purposed: Feel like being eco-friendly? Use your old plastic bags to wrap a present in a fresh way.

8. Use this tutorial and try your hand at making your own wrapping paper. Trust me its easier than you think.

Most importantly, just remember to have fun with it. Giving a gift can be so much more fun than receiving one.

Snowy Day Inspiration

I just love this picture. Isn't it adorable?! It remindes me of just how much love our holiday letters really do carry with them through the post. Plus, it's perfect for a day like today since it's such a bright and snowy afternoon here in Buffalo. Big fluffy snowflakes are falling outside my window and I almost wish I was sitting in one of my favorite coffee spots sipping hot cocoa with melted marshmallows and pretending to peruse an Art Voice while actually watching all the people hustle by with their heads down and hands snugly tucked away inside their pockets. But, then I remember that in order to get to that coffee shop I'd have to be one of those cold fast walking people. So...I think I'll make my own hot cocoa today.

The Dog Ate My Homework

Oh dear neglected blog I promise to never leave you again for quite so long. It's just that my laptop was out of commission. Which meant all of my pretty pictures and interesting links were as well and I didn't want to write a post about not being able to write a post. And then for the better half of last week I was so used to not writing and editing pictures for here that I seemed to forget how to budget my time accordingly. So, now here we are two weeks later and I'm all full of excuses.

I have learned a valuable lesson though about the importance of having a back-up. And I'll be looking into online bookmarking sites like tumblr and we heart it this weekend. If anyone has had any experiences with either one please send me an email or leave a comment. I'd love to hear your thoughts. And I promise not to be a stranger again : )

In The Works and On The Table...

Recently, I've been finding that there are a few lovely blogs I just don't make time for anymore. That is to say I just don't have the time to read them. The online journals that I do get to enjoy are the ones that make several quick little posts throughout the day. And I think there is something to that. Those blogs with the little mini-posts, its not just that they fit into my schedule. It's that I find them more fun. They share a lovely image, new product, or idea but all at different times. Sometimes I go back later the same day to see what's new and other times I head over there later in the week and find a whole bunch of posts filled to the brim with eye candy just waiting there for me. Because they're not too lengthy I have time to read them all instead of feeling overwhelmed that I've missed too much.

So, I'd like to give it a try here today and see how it goes. For my regular readers out there I'd love to hear your take on which style of posting you prefer. I'm thinking that with the several mini posts I'd be able to share more throughout the week instead of just Monday, Wednesday, Friday. There are so many fun finds I stumble across every day, but if I don't have a lot to say about it it doesn't get shared. So, I think I'd like to change that - at least for a few days a week.

I Want Homemade Goodies

There is just something special about giving a handmade gift for the holidays. It lets someone know that they are special; that they are thought of. But let's face it not all of us can knit a sweater, print our own cards, or whip up a batch of homemade peanut brittle. I for one have learned there are some things better left to the pros.

So this season I have vowed to celebrate a homemade Christmas without having to make a thing. And while, yes, I will be hand printing a few gifts here and there mostly I will be seeking out items made by others. This year Etsy is going to be my shinning beacon; guiding me to the handmade goodies. With so many talented and independent artisans and crafters to choose from the most difficult obstacle I fear I'll have to face is convincing myself to not buy everything! And today I'm diving deeper into my hunt with some homemade sweet treats that would make great hostess gifts or stocking stuffers for the holidays.

I Want Candy

Ever wake up in the morning with a song in your head? Of course you do. We all do from time to time right? Although I do find it a bit odd since I spend most of my time not listening to music. I can't imagine how anything could find its way into my fresh out of R.E.M. subconsciousness. But, regardless of my frequent musical abstinence (which is due in part to a computer/itunes disaster that put me off reloading my music into my computer for a 3rd time rather than an aversion to stimulating sounds) I still wake up with a song in my head more days than not. Occasionally, I can even recall dreams where music was playing throughout the entire thing - anyhow, back to this morning.

Despite getting up an hour earlier, I feel rejuvenated and energetic and I believe its because I woke up singing this song. This song put such a smile on my face and is so rooted in my mind right now that I'm going to whip up a whole new I Want Wednesday post for later this afternoon because of it. Although, it could just be because I'm a sucker for sweets! Anyhow, enjoy your 80's flashback and the rest of your morning :) I'll see you later today with some yummy finds.

Waiting Is The Hardest Part...

Okay, okay I know I already talked about this film back over the summer, but its just so hard to wait for it to come out! Never in my life have I been more excited to see a film than I am to see this one. I have literally watched the trailer countless, countless times and I had to share it today for this morning's movie. I am not your typical Tim Burton fan. I mean, I didn't even bother to see Sweeney Todd despite the fact that I'm fond of the original play. But, this movie of Alice in Wonderland is based on one of the greatest books of all time - one of the truest, purest forms of story telling that I have ever read. It's a story for kids and adults alike. It's a tale that was meant to awaken a resting imagination and its one story, that I have always found, makes the colors of our world seem brighter.

While there have been several movie versions of the book made this trailer seems to nail it just right and I have high hopes for Tim Burton's interpretation. I do hope that many of you will find some time to carve out and read the book first (psst, or just borrow it from the library for free). Trust me its worth missing a few nights of Grey's Anatomy for. I for one plan on giving it another read before I see the movie in March - oh, March! Are you really that far away?

Some pictures of projects in the works. The ornament and ornate swirl Christmas tree images have already been burned into screens and will be released into the Birdcage Cards' shop this upcoming week. The birch trees you may already recognize from this card set. While, the flying birdcage (a possible new logo) and the bows I'm still playing with and have been on and off for a month now. I'm debating size, color, and whether or not some will have sketched tags hanging from them. I also have a few more cards coming out this week but those will have to be a surprise! I'll give you a hit think classic ladylike elements inspired by the John Dillinger film Public Enemies staring Johnny Depp and Marion Cotillard.

I interrupt your regularly scheduled I Want Wednesday post to bring you something I need - homemade chicken noodle soup like the one above made from this recipe. And quickly too! I've been attacked by a cold virus and I need some warm broth and a good night's sleep to set me right again.Then, by tomorrow when I'm feeling a little bit better (finger's crossed) I'll be needing this awesome soup and sandwich ceramic tray for one of my favorite comfort foods - a grilled cheese sandwich and a small bowl of some yummy tomato soup. Seeing as how I'm sick and all I'll probably want to eat it snuggled up on the couch and this way I won't have to manage a dangerous balancing act of soup bowl, sandwich plate, and what to do when I want to dunk. Cause we all want to dunk don't we? I mean, after all, that is the point of the tomato soup is it not?

Okay, okay I'm off to take my aching bones back to bed and on Friday I'll be sharing some sneak peaks of a few new projects in the works, aching bones or not!

Hi and welcome back to the start of another work week! I hope everyone enjoyed their Halloween weekend. I just love Halloween and this was such a good one for us here in Buffalo. There was a strong wind rustling the leaves about and the moon was quite large and luminous ; perfect for creating a spooky ambiance. Although, because we had over 150 trick or treaters at our house this year it meant it was a long time sitting outside on the front porch in the cold. And now, unfortunately, I've been feeling a little icky since Sunday with the sniffles in full effect. Oh well, I guess it comes with the territory of living in good old cold Buffalo. No use complaining, huh?

Yay! I'm so excited because today is A.) Friday and B.) my free gift from Gemma Correll came in the post today along with a few extra little ditties tucked inside. A short while ago I won this giveaway over on Pikaland. The email I received that told me I was the big winner - well let's just say that it was one message I was truly ecstatic to find in my inbox. I have had such a great big artist crush on Gemma and her witty style for some time now. So, I am truly over the moon about my lovely new tote bag! Too bad I'm too old for trick or treating 'cause I'd love to stash loads of sweets inside it. And those few extra ditties I mentioned - two cute postcards of her work. I think they'll look lovely framed and hanging in my hallway.

I don’t know about you but I loved school. And having finished college a few years ago I’m feeling a bit nostalgic for some school yard flair. Those plaid skirts I wore back elementary and junior high school were so sweet, but sadly my old jumper from 8th grade no longer fits (yes I did try, but in my defense it was for Halloween). Okay, okay I admit this is a pretty cheesy video, but I can't help it! It's so dumb its funny. I'm a sucker for bad acting 80's movies with any kind of choreographed dance moves. And yes, the break dancing ones are the best. So this little video brings back all my latch key childhood memories of watching 80's movies replay over and over on HBO after school. And come on, are those Barbie shoes for Ken that those dancing digits are sporting?! You have to admit its at least a little bit entertaining...right?

Good morning and welcome to all my new followers! I hope everyone had a nice weekend. I spent mine relaxing with family. I was lucky enough to have a super fun sleepover, with matching owl pajamas, and my niece on Saturday. And on Sunday, I went to a tailgate party to celebrate the engagement of one of my cousins. I'm not a football fan so I didn't know what to expect, but there was tons of yummy comfort food like mac'n cheese, chicken wings, and chocolate fondue for all sorts of sweets. Oh, and I should mention it was held here in a big opened up banquet room with a huge projection screen showing the Bills game. I swear the players looked as big as I imagine they are in real life! And the little thank you gifts were beer koozies in Bills colors with the couple's names and the date of upcoming wedding printed on them; so fun! All in all it was a very fun experience. I came home with a full tummy, tight jeans, and a re-affirmed love of a good beer.

Magically Disappearing Days

Yesterday, I took a trip over to one of my new (to me) favorite blogs Mint and found the start of new series called Howdy Do It. Both Ellie, of Mint, and Margot, of Pitch Design Union, teamed up to take turns on each other's blog each Monday and share useful tips, tricks, and short-cuts to help out independent designers working freelance and/or running their own businesses, like myself. I don't want to give too much away and re-cap their posts from this week. Afterall, I'm sure you'll want to read each one for yourself, but I gotta say I found solidarity in what these two smart cookies had to say. While reading Ellie's post, in particular, I found myself serveal times saying "wait a minute, did I write this?".

You know, working from home and on your own can be both exhilarating and terrifying. Especially, when that long list of to-do's is all up to you and you alone. My days start early. They end late. The breaks are few in between and still the time just seems to vanish. Poof! It’s gone. And it’s starting to make me a little nervous; like I’ve been busy working all day, but what did I really get done?! So many tasks take longer than I anticipate and time is a precious commodity in my world. So, Ellie suggested keeping a time log for one day just to keep track of where your time really goes. And the best part is that she has, oh so generously, shared some adorable pdf's to download and print out our own pretty logs. You know, something to entice us with.

I think its a great idea. The pdf's came out super cute. And I'm definitely going to give these time management sheets a try. I’m really looking forward to the continuation of this series, if for nothing else than to know that I'm not alone and that other empowered women are facing similar obstacles.

Welcome back to the work week! I hope everyone had a nice and relaxing weekend. I know I did. Sunday I went from pajamas to shower to a new pair of pajamas. It was wonderful. I also stumbled into today's Monday Morning Movie, Orla Kiely's new video lookbook for Fall 2009. I instantly fell in love with it and knew I would have to share it right away.

Its just so fun and girly what with their long legs doing their silly moves. Plus, the clothes are gorgeous. They're kind of fresh faced schoolgirl meets tastefully sexy and super hip secretary. I mean really, I'd like one of each. And did you see that blue A-line coat with the fur collar?! Sigh...to die for - and I don't say that often. Tell Me Your Secrets...

I don't freestyle with my word processor anymore. Since I started my blog I just don't seem to write for me anymore. I use my spare time for virtual hunting and pretend shopping. Which are two things I rarely, if ever, did before.
This morning I sat down for breakfast with my November issue of Real Simple to discover a great article where a handful of writers and photographers were asked to share their favorite time of day. I remembered at that moment that my favorite time had always been when I took a quite moment to journal - when I would dialogue with myself through pen and paper or buttons on a keyboard. You know, keeping a journal is like going to the therapist, seeing a new movie, and visiting with an old friend who always gives the best advice all rolled into one. It gives you a chance to process things that you normally would dismiss or flat out be too busy to notice. And it used to be a fundamental part of my week.

A friend of mine wondered the other day why I didn't do creative writing on my blog and suggested that it might be a fun idea for me to try. And I was left thinking - shit, I just don't write anymore - at all. When the hell did that happen? The journals I keep now have evolved into visual scrapbooks; full of doodles and pictures I've sketched in my free time. But, rarely do they house words.
You know maybe I gave up on it because I was sick of listening to myself over think things, but along the way I stopped thinking about anything that was personal, about anything intimate. So, no more neglecting myself and ignoring the things that need to be dealt with. From now on I am making an effort to listen to what I have to say. Will you do the same?

Halloween is fast approaching and for those of you that don't already know it is one of my absolute favorite holidays. Caramel apples and crazy costumes, free candy and ding-dong-ditch, horror movies and, well...sleeping with a light on. Halloween is that one week in the year when, for some reason, all of America collectively decides to scare our children. Yeah, its great isn't it?

Anyhow, I was trying to save this mini-movie for the last week of the month, but, well excitement got the best of me. So, here's a tiny taste of Halloween fun to come, something a little dark and sinister.

Mixed Doily Minis

One of the best parts about being a stationery designer is that when you need something that can't easily be found you can just make it! So that's exactly what I did.

I took my favorite muted colors and my favorite current concept (paper doilies) and whipped up some small 2 3/4" x 2 3/4" folded note cards. I love mini note cards because they truly are the most versatile kind of stationery. You can slip the card in its envelope and tuck it inside a present as a lovely gift enclosure. You can punch a hole in one of the top corners, thread some ribbon through, and hang it from a bottle of wine as a gift tag. Or you can write a secret message inside and tuck it under a pillow, into a briefcase, or on top of a box of sweets! They're just so darned useful.

I send cards all the time through the mail when I can't be there to say something meaningful in person or when I need to tuck some cash inside in lieu of a gift. But, I mean think about it, when you're right there presenting the gift in person do you really need a $4.00 card to write three little lines in? Nope. All you need is a tiny little gift card where you can write "Happy Birthday" or "Congratulations! Love you tons" inside and be done with it. Honestly, it's my idea of the perfect arrangement.

And because these little guys are such a big hit every time I use them, because I know just how hard it is to find them, and because I know how useful they really are I decided to offer these Paper Doily Mini Note Cards paired with 6 very soft muted orange colored envelopes (not nearly as dark and vivid as shown in the pictures) in my shop. While you're there feel take some time to browse through and see what else is new. I've been quite the busy bee and I'm not even close to being done for the season!

I Heart Suspect Shoppe

I was browsing through paper n stitch this morning and stumbled across this lovely print from Suspect Shoppe. From the thoughtful color scheme to the whimsical concept it's really quite breathtaking. So, I immediately headed over to the artist, Mati Rose McDonough's, Etsy shop to see more of her amazing work.

The thing with art is, while you may be able to appreciate all of it, some of it just fits better than others. And the work of Mati Rose fits me like the perfect pair of worn in leather flats from jcrew. I would if I could buy one of everything, especially one of the prints of her collage birds or lucky elephants. Oh and how I'd love to get my hands on the original painting of slate junco. As you all know I'm a sucker for collage work.

So, while I'm turning over my couch cushions and counting the change from my piggy bank be sure to take some time and head on over to Suspect Shoppe. Its like walking through the most beautiful dream.

Forget Me Knot

I've got a to-do list the length of Mt. Kilimanjaro and that's just my one for Birdcage Cards! I've written everything down in hopes that it will help me better organize my time, but I fear that all I've done is waste a good twenty minutes writing it. Oh, and let's hope I haven't forgotten anything either! So, before I start to feel overwhelmed I will take a breath and remind myself of a promise I made not to long ago; to tackle each adventure one at a time and to always be mindful of the task at hand. Aahhhh, there I feel more in control already. Now wait, what was I supposed to be doing now?

Stumbled upon this super cool wall vinyl the other day at PopWall. I was never big on wall decals before simply because I've always been afraid that I would waste my money by messing up on the placement. Stick, un-stick, unfortunately, no re-stick. But, this paper evolving into an origami bird decal literally had me saying "wow". If they're making wall vinyls this cool then I'm gonna have to suck up my fear, 'cause this bad boy is too awesome to pass up.

Oh, and I should mention, there are wall stickers that do re-stick. A few months ago I was lucky enough to win a giveaway from Mae over on the Yellowgoat blog. I snagged some amazing Babushka Doll fabric wall stickers for my niece and these bad boys stick, un-stick, and re-stick with ease. Its a great product and I'd highly recommend some for the little one(s) in your life.

Woodland Wonder

I've been fast and steadily working my way into Fall. And now that its cold both inside and out I keep wondering about all the little critters getting ready for winter; filled to the brim with busy work. So, while I snuggle up inside with two pairs of wool socks on (I'm plagued with the coldest feet in Buffalo) I thought I might take a virtual trip through the woods and see what everyone is up to...
It seems I'm not the only animal to think of layering up. Check out that Gentle Deer Man. He's got a scarf and everything! Oouuu, and it seems that the birds are already migrating south. And hey, look, those bunnies are on the run - headed for warmer weather I'm sure; flock purse and Jackrabbit Necklace. Ouch, looks like some deer met his untimely end. Did you see those Vintage Deer Antlers mounted on the wall? Yeesh. It's getting colder too. I probably should have dressed warmer like in this Plaid Flannel Bustier Top - cute right?! Talk about standing out from the boys. Maybe I should accessorize too, with a cute Brown Bear Brooch. What do you think, too much? Naw, just right. Afterall, when in Rome dress the part! Awww, look at this little leaping bunny nightlight. He jumped right over the moon! I didn't know they could jump that high. Did you? Oh, and this must be his friend Butterscotch Tweed Fox - wait. No time for introductions. I think I smell a fire. There, a cute little cabin in the woods! I wonder if anyone's home. I wonder if they have any mounted deer in there? I don't know its pretty cold out here though. Maybe I should just suck it up and go inside; Buck It Up Note Card.

Hello? Hello? Nope no one's home. Oouu, I love what they've done with the place. That knitted apple tree pillow looks so soft and cozy and I love that print, My, What A Big Heart You Have. And, that birch pendant light is just fantastic. Cabin in the woods or not I'd love to own that piece. You know, this place seems pretty authentic. They have an enchanted forest table set with maple seed pod napkins, and look, another cozy pillow. This one is a stitched applique pillow cover of an evergreen forest. I bet someone made that by hand. Sigh...this print, this one here is my favorite. I wish I had a cozy little acorn to call my very own; A Quiet Forest print. Must be a man and woman that live here because there are twig hair pins and log cuff links. I wonder if I snagged one of those hair pins if anyone would notice. Its just that my bangs won't grow out fast enough and I forgot to clip them back before I left the house and....hey, wait a minute that plaid bomber jacket looks pretty warm. That might come in handy on my walk back home-shhh! Someone's coming. Hide!

It's All About The Process

I love when writers and artists share their process. Afterall, what's that phrase? It's not where you end up but how you got there that matters. Its the journey, the discovery - that's the fun part. So, when I came across the preliminary sketches of, children's book author and illustrator, Madi's new book I'm A Little Bit Scared Of... you can imagine my excitement.

The book is amazing! I mean I adore mixed media in general, but her use of collage work in this children's book is just stunning. Here take a look and see what I mean...

Madi's use of fabric, paper, and original drawings all meld perfectly together to form a cohesive world for her characters. Speaking of, let's take a look at some of the behind the scenes work that Madi was kind enough to share on her fun website. As I browsed through, myself, I couldn't help but wonder what the weight of each page in her sketchbook must feel like; with all the layers of fabric and paper glued around and on top of her sketches. It's definitely one sketchbook that I wish I could finger through personally.

Finding Madi's website reminded me to enjoy the process. I'm always in such a rush to get the mundane things done and out of the way with that I often miss the beauty in them. So, this weekend I'm tasking all you fabulous ladies with a little challenge - try something new just to see what it feels like. If you always need music on when you clean the house, try it in silence instead; listen to the sounds of the activity at hand. Try a new food just to process the smell of it. Take the kids for a mystery ride just to enjoy getting them ready and loading up the car.

Whatever it is just be mindful of the process and enjoy the journey. Don't just rush and hurry up to get things over with so you can start the "fun" stuff. Life and everything in it is the fun stuff. Take the time to notice all the little things. Afterall, we only get this one chance, this one life to experience. So soak it up while you can and enjoy each and every moment. Besides, even if its painful or boring you're lucky to have it.

Light As A Feather...

A few weeks ago I had the most elaborate dream. In it a feather pillow burst open and I was unable to run away. Instead, I stood still mesmerized by the falling feathers that were as white and as fluffy as snow. Needless to say it was one of those strange dreams that stick with you and for days afterwards I kept sketching feathers and played around with the idea of feathers mirroring snowflakes. In the end I ended up with a new screen printed card called Feather Flakes. The Fall version is in a red wine or rust colored ink reminiscent of the changing leaves and, in a few weeks, I'll be listing the Winter version in the Birdcage Cards' shop as well. It's printed in a light steely blue ink and paired with a silver envelope.

Since I've just printed 20 new cards last night and I'm gaga for feathers anyway this week's I Want Wednesday post is very plumage centric. So, for all you feather fanatics here's a healthy dose of colorful plumage...

To Sleep To Dream...

Welcome back to the start of another working man's week. Monday mornings are always the hardest for me to get out of bed. You see I'm a dreamer -not figuratively- quite literally; I have very vivid technicolor dreams. And after a weekend of sleeping in it's always the toughest on Monday to loose those extra hours of precious dream time. So, with my head in the clouds and my body craving a warm rumpled bed to crawl back in to I think today's the day to share this charming video by Oren Lavie - Her Morning Elegance.

Shot entirely in stills this might just be the coolest video I've ever seen. I love the language of movement delivered by, red haired Israeli actress, Shir Shomron and its safe to say that I'm definitely over the moon about the t-shirt that becomes a bird and the little socks used as a school of fish! From the concept to the execution it really is picture perfect. I hope you enjoy this one. I mean really, how could you not?!

I adore the far out work of illustrator Jenn Ski. Though clearly influenced by mid-century modern design, her style is distinct and completely her own. I'm looking forward to taking a trip to my local Michaels craft store this weekend to check out her A - Z Animals Scrapbooking Line. Admittedly, I'm a little obsessed with the Letter A (alligator) print shown below. Why don't you take a virtual trip to Jenn Ski's shop yourself this weekend? I'm sure you'll find more than a few pieces to get excited about!

Oouuu, and Jenn also has a vintage and a vinyl shop full of groovy finds for your home and its walls! So, be sure to stop there after lunch - you know after you rest your feet from all that walking.

Baby It's Cold Outside...

Brrrr! Its so cold this morning, but one of the things I love most about Fall weather is getting to cozy up inside while the world remains chilly on the other side of the window pane. So, on this very brisk weathered Fall afternoon I'll be transferring the rest of my winter sketches onto transparencies, burning three new screens, making test prints of said screens while munching away on the yummiest golden delicious apples I've ever gotten from the market, reading this book (hopefully) with my legs curled up under a warm blanket, and trying to round up a copy of Fringe as I missed the premier last night.

And now that I've sufficiently procrastinated by sharing my play-by-play with you all I think I'd better get back to work...

Hand Stitched Excellence

Over the weekend I attended the opening of a new exhibition, Craft Art, at the Burchfield Penney Art Center. It showed a series of pieces by a variety of Western New York artists who work in fiber, clay, and metal. What stood out to me the most were a series of embroidered pieces; three half skirt aprons and a small table cloth with an interesting barbwire flourish. I just loved them and the idea of taking a traditional craft and experimenting with it in a modern and innovative way. So, today I thought I'd share a few more embroidery artists from the Etsy community. Hope you enjoy the collection...

Monday Morning Movie: Performance Art With l' Orchestre d'hommes-orchestre

Good morning and happy Monday! Today is my 100th post so I thought I'd share something fun and close to my heart - performance art. l' Orchestre d'hommes-orchestre, which translates to Orchestra Conductor men, are a group of talented musical inventors who took their own creative world to the streets of Quebec this summer and performed a series of three shows all centered around an old milk truck. It was hard to decide which performance to share this morning. So, I figured I'd just start everyone off with the first of the series. You can find the second one here and the third here.

This troupe of musicians are also greatly inspired by Tom Waitts, a consummate creator and a tinkerer at heart. He is a man who sought to find unique sounds, to make music from things all around him, and to breathe life into inanimate objects. I hope someday I'll get the chance to see l' Orchestre d'hommes-orchestre play homage to the man and his great work 'cause, I gotta say, its looks like a lotta fun.

New In the Shop:

I've been very slowly releasing my fall cards in the shop. I'd love to say it's to build anticipation, but really I've been too busy with other orders to be able to turn my sketches into burned silkscreens or stamps yet. Fortunately, I was able to get two new screen prints completed last week and one of them listed in the Birdcage Cards' shop so far.

Shown above is my newest edition, Lovely Leaves. It's an original hand drawn, hand screen printed card in a lovely mustard yellow color. Printed on a heavy 100lb card stock and measuring 3 3/4" x 5 1/8" this bad boy comes in at only $3.00. I'll be adding more color options and bundled prices for this card in the next week or so, as well as a handful of more original hand drawn cards. So, be sure to stayed tuned!

I Want Wednesday: Time

Lately, I just don't seem to be able to get enough done in a day. Which ultimately means there is no me time; time to relax, to play, oh, I don't know to eat a meal at the dinning room table. So this week, I'm in desperate need of time. More time to...

...to sleep in until the filtered sunlight wakes me; to sleep in so long that I'm actually able to remember my colored dreams. Oh, God how I'd love that.

More time to walk around barefoot in the backyard and look for light reflections in soapy bubbles.

More time to sketch and draw and paint; to be creative just for me and to get dried paint stuck beneath my fingernails just for the hell of it!

More time to, not just read a new book, but to re-read old favorites left to collect dust on bookshelves in spare bedrooms.

More time to rent out a house on the East Coast before winter dashes in; a house where I will have more time to sleep in and blow bubbles and paint pictures of my colorful dreams and settle into bed at night by re-reading old favorites and...more time to breathe.

Monday Morning Movie: Procrastination

I think this animated short by Johnny Kelly is the bees knees. Just wait until you get the part in the beginning where the book shelves are color coordinated...sigh, isn't it pretty?! Don't you just wanna try it at home? I know I do, but my massive bookshelf is all organized by category and then alphabetically within each category. And you know what, that was a lot of work so I think I'll just put the color coordinated idea on the back burner for now - wait! Is that procrastination?

Oouuu, and if you've got some time to waste on your day off go here and check out this animated short also by Kelly based on a story about a lobster named Shelly. Its beautiful and sad, lovely and depressing all wrapped in to one.

Lately Lovin': Claire Scully

I can't enough of British artist Claire Scully and her new online portfolio the quiet revolution. Based across the pond, Scully works as a freelance artist with clients like the New York Times, Random House, Penguin books, and Universal Records to name a few. Her personal work is inspired by the relationship between large metropolises and the natural world and I adore how she infuses an organic feel into her digital collages. And don't you just love that 'trunk' font above too?! I'd kill to make some wedding invites using that gorgeous font. Oouu, and I'm also wishing I had one of these lovely prints hanging in my office.
